Baby FAST Sponsored by Smart Start of New Hanover County

Baby FAST is a multifamily group intervention model for young parents and their infants and toddlers (age 0-3). It works especially well for first-time mothers, and is intended to protect vulnerable families with risk factors, by providing support, family strengthening, group intervention, mental and substance abuse counseling, parenting skills and networking opportunities.

Success Stories

Success Story: Brittany Johnson (PLC)

Brittany Johnson came to Mosley PLC from Ashley High School. She was referred to us because she had missed the last 3 months of the previous school year due to the fact that she was struck by lightning. Brittany had to literally learn how to walk and talk and write again. She was determined to get back into school and graduate. She only needed 4 credits to graduate and therefore, Mosley was the better educational option for her. In the few short months that she was here, she struggled with some medical issues that at times would cause her to be absent a few days at a time. Brittany never gave up and did her best to get her work done. She completed her 4 credits in one semester and was among the other 6 students in the first graduating class at Mosley PLC. Brittany was also the recipient of the Panther Award, which is given to the student who overcomes diversity in their lives and rises above. Brittany is now attending CFCC for Early Childhood Education and doing well!

Five Students Graduate in Summer

CIS Cape Fear’s computer lab was full of local students this past summer.  Fifty students in all attended the NovaNET course credit recovery summer program at CIS  Cape Fear’s WIRE center.  Thirty-two of the fifty received class credit for a course previously failed in the traditional setting.

Of those thrity-two, five students graduated because of the credits they received during the program.  One student even finished his senior project during the program, in addition to making up course credit.

New Hanover High School and New Hanover County Schools held a special graduation ceremony at New Hanover High School to recognize the five new graduates.  School Superintendant, Dr. Alfred Lerch gave the commencement address and students marched to Pomp and Circumstances while their families watched.  The NovaNet program gave these students a second chance to achieve.

Baby FAST helped me relieve a lot of stress going on in my mind.  I learned to be straight up with people - I loved it!  I have become more responsible with my child. I have a big smile on my face -Baby FAST had a whole lot to do with that.  People used to be asking me why I looked so mean.  It helped me with my anger problems - I took anger management classes three times...I just come to Baby FAST and I feel loved!  I've been doing a whole lot better.  My mom even told me I've changed - she sees a new person.

Tyson

Tyson Wolff came to Mosley PLC after being out of school for almost 2 years. He had attended New Hanover High School and was a very good student.  He left school because he was struggling with substance abuse problems. He had a good support system with his parents but needed to find his own way to get his high school diploma. He found Mosley to be the best option for him to graduate because he only needed 3 credits to graduate. He came to school, got his work done, and went to summer school to finish up the last credit. He graduated in July and is now going to CFCC and working 2 part time jobs. He is living on his own and stops in every so often to say hello to his Mosley family!

Baby FAST helped me become more mature and helped me become a better mother.  I liked the part where they took the young mothers into one class and taught us how to massage the baby and make him comfortable.  Baby FAST also showed me how to talk to my Baby's daddy and as you can see, we are back together.
