CIS Suspension Program

CIS Suspension Program is designed to encourage students who have been suspended from school, for periods of up to 10 days, to keep up with their work and address the reasons for suspension.  CIS Suspension Program accepts students from New Hanover County  schools who have been short term suspended and provides tutors, arts enrichment classes, and character building classes.  Parents of suspended students have the opportunity to call Communities in Schools to schedule a registration for their child.  Each student is required to bring class work to CIS Suspension Program.  Each day begins at 8 AM and ends at 3:45 PM.  Transportation is not provided to the Suspension Program.  Lunches are provided by D.C. Virgo Middle School and require normal payment or the student’s lunch number.

CIS Suspension Program provides continuing support to students after they return to their schools.  Periodic follow-ups are conducted at the student’s school to ensure a positive transition into the normal school setting.  Students are also encouraged to participate in other Communities in Schools programs to build positive and lasting relationships with other students and staff.

The CIS Suspension Program served over 250 students in 2008-2009 school year.

History and Background:

Formerly known as Program E.A.S.Y.

The Communities in Schools Suspension Program began in the late 1990s as “Program E.A.S.Y.” (Educational Alternatives for Suspended Youth) in Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Wilmington.  The program enjoyed years of success under the guidance of William Dudley and, later, Nikki Reid.  E.A.S.Y. allowed for suspended students to stay up to date with their work in a caring environment.  Program E.A.S.Y. later left Shiloh and was welcomed to the Communities in Schools of Cape Fear family in 2006.  E.A.S.Y. changed it’s name to Communities in Schools Suspension Program in 2009.
