Our Mission

At Communities In Schools (CIS), we surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Our Programs

Current programs include Student Support Specialists at 30 area schools, afterschool programs, summer enrichment camps, programs to support and empower young parents, and restorative justice programs that serve as alternatives to the juvenile justice system.

Student Support Specialists

Student Support Specialists provide case-managed services to students identified as being at-risk of dropping out, or in need of specific intervention services.

After School Programming

We support the needs of at-risk students and their families in a safe environment by providing free, positive, daily after-school programming to New Hanover County and Pender County students.

CIS Restorative Justice Programs

Diversion programs for low-level, juvenile offenders to recognize the harm they caused, the impact of their choices, and opportunities to repair the harm, without entering the justice system.

Baby Steps - Young Parent Support

Baby Steps Program is a two-tiered system of support for parents age 21 and younger, living in New Hanover and Pender counties.

Freedom School

This six-week summer literacy and cultural enrichment program is a research-based, multicultural Integrated Reading Curriculum that supports students and their families.
