Volunteer Opportunities

Opportunities to Engage:

Tutor / Mentor – 

The following opportunities are typically available for tutoring / mentoring, but due to COVID, they are currently on hold:

During the school day:

You can volunteer to tutor at any of our school sites during the day (In New Hanover County: Alderman, Forest Hills, Freeman, Snipes, Williston, Wrightsboro, and New Hanover High School; In Pender County: Burgaw Middle School, Cape Fear Middle School, Penderlea School, West Pender Middle School, Heide Trask High School, and Pender High School. Our PaSS program is a 10-week, one hour per week, volunteer opportunity through which you are matched with a 3rd grader who has been identified as not likely to pass their End Of Grade tests and promote to the next grade level. You will be provided with a reading comprehension curriculum and will meet with the same student(s) one-on-one for 30 minutes each week during the 10 weeks leading up to the EOGs, working with them on reading comprehension. After school hours:

Tutors are needed to help with afterschool programs in both counties.  In New Hanover County, WIRE provides afterschool support to 3-12th grade students at our building on the corner of 11th and Orange Streets downtown, Monday – Friday from 2:30-5:30 following the traditional school calendar. Email Marrio Jeter to sign up. Pender County programs run Monday – Thursday afternoons at each of our school sites. Email Sally Fields to learn more.

Young Parent Support:

Volunteers are needed to help with our Young Parent Circle, which works to support and strengthen young parents and their families. This program meets each Monday evening at First Baptist Church, during the school year. Contact Canesha Jacobs for more information.

Special Events

Volunteers are needed to help organize and facilitate several special events throughout the year:

Stuff The Bus is our annual school supply drive which collects supplies for students in need. The event runs annually the first or second weekend in August. Volunteers are needed to help collect supplies at each of our partner stores over the weekend, as well as help the following week to count and sort donations. Email

Wrightsville Plunge is our annual New Year’s Day Plunge at Wrightsville Beach. Volunteers are welcome to help recruit sponsors and plan the event, as well as come out the day of the event and help make sure it runs smoothly, Email

Healthy Start Breakfast is our annual fundraising breakfast typically held in February.  Volunteers are needed to help organize the event and greet guests. Email

CIS Fashion Show at Landfall is an annual fashion show highlighting Azalea Festival and Spring fashions, held in early-March at Landfall Country Club. Volunteers are welcome to help recruit sponsors and plan the event. Email
